GOING SLOW ON CAYE CAULKER
Picture this: no cars, no rush, just pure relaxation. Caye Caulker’s unofficial motto is “Go Slow,” and it’s a mantra everyone here lives by. Here, we enjoyed a wonderful four-day stay on this island before embarking on a sailing adventure. However, to be completely honest, the island offers such a wealth of experiences that we could have easily stayed a lot longer. In the spirit of that, we’ve put together a list of everything we loved about Caye Caulker and why it is very much worth the visit. Here goes!
1. BEACH BLISS
If you’re a beach lover, you’re in for a treat. Caye Caulker boasts pristine beaches with powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. You’ll be tempted to kick off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the soft sand while basking in the Caribbean sun. In fact, there is so much beach that we found ourselves in the water many times simply going about our day. Caye Caulker is also a small island so matter where you are staying chances are it is just a stone’s throw from the sea – talk about oceanfront!
2. WATER ADVENTURES GALORE
Calling all water enthusiasts! Caye Caulker offers an array of aquatic adventures. Snorkeling and diving are must-tries, thanks to the island’s proximity to the Belize Barrier Reef – the world’s second-largest coral reef system. Swim with colorful fish, explore vibrant coral formations, and don’t be surprised if you make some new underwater friends, like nurse sharks and stingrays at Shark Ray Alley. We ended our time on Caye Caulker by setting sail with Ragga Sailing Adventures, one of many excursions based on the island. No matter your experience level, there will be something for you!
3. A FEAST FOR FOODIES
Prepare your taste buds for a culinary journey! Caye Caulker’s diverse dining scene features fresh seafood, mouthwatering Caribbean dishes, and international flavors. Savor conch ceviche, indulge in a seafood platter with your toes in the sand, and sip on Belizean rum and tropical cocktails to complete your delicious island experience. Restaurants will have their catches of the day on display and often times it is grilled fresh right on the spot. It is so fresh you will never see seafood the same way again.
4. A VIBRANT NIGHT SCENE
When the sun dips below the horizon, Caye Caulker cranks up the fun meter! The island’s nightlife scene is all about laid-back, good-time vibes. Picture yourself sipping fruity drinks under the stars or dancing barefoot in the sand – that’s the Caye Caulker way. With beachfront bars, live music spots, and friendly local hangouts, there’s something for everyone here. So, get ready to let loose and have a blast – Caye Caulker’s nightlife is your ticket to endless island fun!
5. ADORABLY QUAINT SIGNAGE
This may be a very specific detail but Caye Caulker’s signage is a testament to the island’s easygoing spirit. Here, you won’t encounter flashy billboards or neon distractions. Instead, you’ll discover a delightful world of hand-painted signs, minimalist directions, and street art that mirrors the island’s relaxed ambiance.
With a touch of Belizean flair and an eco-conscious message, these signs offer guidance without overshadowing the natural beauty of the island. They’re not just directions; they’re part of the Caye Caulker experience – understated, friendly, and in harmony with it’s barefoot ambience.
6. WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS
Nature lovers will find their bliss on Caye Caulker. It’s not just about what’s underwater – the island is a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. Look out for frigatebirds, brown pelicans, herons, and keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles and manatees while kayaking the surrounding waters. Be sure to bring your fins and snorkel as the water just off the beaches is teaming with colorful sea life, a great activity option for those who may not have time for an excursion.
7. A PEDESTRIAN’S PARADISE
Caye Caulker is a car-free island – golf carts and bicycles rule the streets, creating an idyllic, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere. Strolling along sandy paths and embracing the island’s tranquility is all part of the package. Rent a bike and take a day trip around town, taking time to explore the quieter neighborhoods. We loved visiting the island school, the guesthouses on the outskirts (we came upon one called Canuck Cottage which has a special place in my heart seeing a Canadian inspired cabin on a tropical island!) and our favorite stop was the tiny little island airport.
ACCOMODATIONS
Caye Caulker is all about inns and guesthouses so you won’t find any large upscale resorts here. We stayed at a place called Chila’s Cabin which was a lovely single room apartment above The Creamery. Apart from the steady availability of ice cream (a great thing to have on vacation!), we enjoyed it’s island vibe where the sand went right up to the stairs of our door. The cherry on top? It had a dreamy balcony that faced the ocean!
